What is the easiest way to make a pom pom?

The easiest way to make a pom pom is by using a pom-pom maker. The Clover pom pom makers are particularly user-friendly and designed to help you create a nice dense pom pom with minimal effort. Simply wind yarn around the arms of the pom-pom maker, cut, and tie securely to create a perfect pom pom every time.

What You Need to Know About the Clover Pom Pom Maker

First things first, when shopping for pom-pom makers, you’ll find plenty of choices. There are wooden makers, u-shaped arches, and even DIY options using cardboard discs. But if you ask me, the Clover pom pom makers are the way to go.

Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be making round pom poms in different sizes with ease. I even made one that looked just like my friend’s dog!

For those just starting out, I highly recommend purchasing the complete large set of Clover pom pom makers. This way, you can create pom-poms in all different sizes and experiment with different colors.

The unique design of the Clover set makes it a breeze to line up the center part of the inner arch, and once you’ve mastered it, you’ll have a nice dense pom-pom every time. It's far easier than using a tie or other homemade methods.

What Do I Need to Make a Pom-Pom?

To create your very own perfect pom-pom using the Clover pom pom makers, you’ll need a few key items:

  • Pom-Pom Maker: The Clover brand is my go-to.

  • Sharp Scissors: I find that smaller scissors with a pointed tip work best.

  • Yarn: Not too thick when starting out; it’s easier to handle.

How to Use a Clover Pom Pom Maker

Below you’ll find step by step instructions for creating this fun craft project. But in the meantime, I want to walk you through the anatomy of the Clover. I know this sounds silly, but understanding the parts will help you on the road to success.

Watching this video will give you a visual explanation (I am a visual person so I find watching the video to be more helpful than reading the step by step instructions – but how you learn is entirely up to you!

The Clover has two sides that open up horizontally. Each one has what I like to call “legs.” The legs are the side arches that open and close from a single point. Each side has two legs so the pom pom maker has four legs in total.

The Clover also splits apart from the middle. I mention this because oftentimes kids think that they’ve broken the pom pom maker when in reality, this is a very important part of the process. I’ll get to that soon…

Step 1: Wrap the Yarn

Start by winding yarn around one side of the maker, keeping the other two legs closed. This is VERY important! If the legs are separated, they won’t form a proper pom-pom. Wrap your yarn over and over again, making sure it’s snug but not too tight. Once one side feels secure, close it up and move on to the other side.

Step 2: Cut the Yarn

Wrap the yarn around the pom pom maker and cut through the middle.

After both sides are wrapped and snug, it’s time to cut. Use your sharp scissors to cut through the yarn in the space between the two legs. The middle part of the Clover pom pom maker will keep everything in place.

Step 3: Secure Your Pom-Pom

Once you’ve cut all the way through, do not open the legs because everything will fall apart. Trust me, I learned this the hard way!

Tie a knot through the middle.

Grab one long strand of yarn and pull it between the newly cut “legs” and tie a knot. I like to tie my knots very tightly – sometimes two or three times until I feel everything is secure enough to stand the test of time. With children, it is sometimes easier to use a pipe cleaner and twist tightly.

Step 4: Reveal and Trim

Remove the legs and reveal you pom pom. Trim as desired.

Now, you can open the legs and reveal your perfect pom-pom! Use your scissors to trim any loose ends and shape it into the round pom-pom of your dreams.

The best type of yarn to use for making pom-poms is one that is not too thick or too thin, as it allows for easier wrapping and a nice dense pom pom. Acrylic yarn is a popular choice because it’s affordable, comes in a variety of colors, and holds its shape well.

If you're looking to create a perfect pom pom with a Clover pom pom maker, medium-weight yarn works best, but you can experiment with other types depending on the effect you want to achieve.

After tying the knot, you can open the pom-pom maker to reveal your round pom pom.

To make a pom-pom full and fluffy, use a pom-pom maker like the Clover pom pom makers and wrap the yarn tightly and evenly. The more yarn you use, the fuller your round pom pom will be. After cutting and tying, use scissors to trim and shape the pom-pom for a nice dense pom pom look.
