My Honest Review of Brea Reese's Mix2Mold Ceramic Resin
I went to Michaels last week and stumbled upon a new product on the end cap and was instantly intrigued. The product is called "ceramic resin" and promises to cure quickly, is eco friendly and food contact safe.
I knew I had to try it. I've been casting plaster molds for my classes and they always take a full day to cure. With the promise of a 60 minute cure time, I knew I had to try this white powder with the hopes that it would expedite my casting process.
The mold powder comes in two different sizes (2lb and 5lb) and so I picked up one of each. The powder also comes in a variety of colors, but I only picked up the white powder for this test since the ceramic resin powder can be combined with Liquid Color™ to colorize or create a marble effect.
The product line also includes bags of Terrazzo to create an organic looking pop of color. The Brea Reese's website promises to create a smooth, white, durable ceramic finish in 60 minutes. Each package includes enough powder for up to 12 small molds.It sounded too good to be true!
I opened up the package and it promises to transform the powder into a solid, smooth surface similar to kiln-fired pottery with a matte finish in three steps. My mind went crazy with all of the possibilities! I knew if this worked I could make anything from trays, to candle holders, to planters and so much more!

Brea Reese Ceramic Resin (comes in a white ceramic powder and other colors)
Brea Reese liquid color (optional) I saw a turquoise bottle of green liquid color as well as some other colors at Michaels.
Brea Reese terrazzo (optional)
Silicone molds - Brea Reese makes a line of molds and planters but I already had a nice selection of molds and this product works with any silicone mold.
Plant pot mold (optional)
Measuring cup with markers for fl oz and cups
Tool set (optional) or mixing tools
Tips for Using Brea Reese Ceramic Resin
While working with Brea Reese Ceramic Resin opens up a world of creative possibilities, it's essential to follow proper techniques to achieve the best results. Here are some tips for using this versatile medium effectively:
Prepare Your Workspace: Before starting your project, ensure that your workspace is clean, well-ventilated, and free from dust and debris. Lay down a protective covering to prevent spills and stains.
Measure Accurately: I had a problem understanding the instructions because the scooper measurements didn't match the instructions on the back of the bag. To achieve the desired consistency and curing time, it's crucial to measure the resin and hardener accurately.
It says you can use a digital scale to weigh the components in the recommended ratio, but not everyone has that at home. So...based on my experimentation, the best ratio is typically a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio by volume.
They did come out with a companion tool pack, but it was sold out online and in stores so I had to do some trial and error.
Mix Thoroughly: Thoroughly mix the resin and hardener together in a clean, disposable container, stirring gently to avoid introducing air bubbles. Scrape the sides and bottom of the container to ensure all components are fully incorporated.
There is no required mix time like with regular resin. I did wear gloves and use my hands to check for any bubbles or dry, unmixed pockets.
Pour and Level: Once mixed, pour the resin onto your chosen surface or into molds, spreading it evenly with a spatula or brush. Use a torch or heat gun to remove any air bubbles and promote self-leveling.
I didn't have any issues with bubbles so this was not a necessary step for me. If you're pouring into a flower pot silicone molds, you will want to make sure you have enough mixture.
Add Pigments and Inclusions: Experiment with adding pigments, dyes, glitter, or other inclusions to customize the appearance of your resin creations. Mix these additives thoroughly before pouring to ensure even distribution.
I also experimented with not mixing all the way and I love the resulting marble appearance. If you choose to make a simple kind of marble effect, you'll want to add a few drops and then pour in a circular motion. This will make an easy swirl of the ink and the result of the pigment ink is beautiful.
Allow Sufficient Curing Time: Be patient and allow the resin ample time to cure fully before handling or de-molding your creations. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding curing time and conditions, such as temperature and humidity levels.
The package says it cures in 60 minutes but it started to harden after 20 minutes so you need to work quickly.
Finishing Touches: Once cured, sand any rough edges or imperfections and apply a clear topcoat for added protection and shine. Add the gloss finish.
I used the Brea Reese gloss finish, but I probably could have just used mod podge. Your Brea Reese Ceramic Resin masterpiece is now ready to be showcased and admired!

We experimented with creating the terrazzo-style trays. In order to do this, you'll need to mix the pieces in thoroughly and then sand once they're cured. The colorful chips are a nice addition, but I prefer using a lot of our liquid color instead.

Is the Brea Reese white ceramic resin worth trying?
Yes! This was one of my favorite Michaels purchase items and seems to work with all experience levels. In just a few simple steps you can make unique trays in the perfect hue. I found this to be an incredible product, but I am worried that the product won't last long in stores or online because they were deeply discounted when I went to Michaels yesterday.
One thing I loved is that it truly does have a smooth ceramic finish which I was dubious about.
What other items work well with the powder?
If I started again, I would purchase the flower pot silicone mold (I only had tray molds)
For a custom terrazzo look, use the white powder and add the terrazzo chips. You can also make your own terrazzo chips by making thin layers of ceramic resin. You can add additional layers if you want multiple colors.
I would purchase a flower pot molds value set because I found it frustrating to only have one mold.
If you want a more dynamic look, add some gold leaf to your silicone flower pot molds. The end result is stunning!
You can use the glossy sealer or the matte finish sealer. The terrazzo mixture works great, too!
Is Mix2Mold food safe?
Yes! If used with other food safe mixing bowls, etc.
