Papermate Inkjoy gel pens : (if you do not have ink joy pens, stainless steel pens or sharpie gel will work, too.)
tumbler holder: (has an insert for pens, too)
glass rhinestones: (feel free to use resin rhinestones they might not sparkle as much), size ss8/10/12 or whatever the template suggests
Rhinestone tray (I like these because they have a lid and can close)
Optional: rhinestone pen templates
*I love ordering supplies on Amazon because there are tons of selection results, free shipping (typically ships within a few business days) and it’s never final sale so if you change your mind, you can send the supplies back.

How to make rhinestone Inkjoy pens
1. Choose your custom colors for the pen and rhinestones. You can use a single color to match the color of the ink or multiple colors.
2. Remove the finish of the pen by using sandpaper. Some people also like to use nail clippers to remove the clip and then sand or grind it down, but I left mine on.
3. Use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface.
4. Add rhinestones to the tray (if you do not have glass)
5. Place the pen inside the pen holder and begin adding adhesive
6. Starting at the tip, apply rhinestones in the honeycomb pattern. Typically, I work on one color at a time. If you are not sure what pattern to use, you can find digital downloads on Etsy.
The digital downloads are a rhinestone pen template that is easy to follow. The download comes with the full details to create beautiful rhinestone pens.
If you’re new to hand-placing rhinestones and want to learn more about the honeycomb pattern and other placement methods, check out my course on How to Hand Place Rhinestones Like a Pro!
7. Rotate as needed.
8. Let dry for 24-36 hours
Use your beautiful rhinestone pens to spark some joy every time you write! There are so many ways to customize this project based on the user of the pen.
Are they a more classic black ink person or a bright and colorful ink person? You can repeat this DIY project with other types of pens even fine or medium point.
Due to the nature of this product, there will be some slight handmade imperfections. Don’t worry about minor imperfections you won’t notice them once you’re finished.
If you’re gifting these custom pens to a student, make sure they’re in middle or high school. I wouldn’t recommend giving this to small children with the small rhinestones.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about making DIY rhinestone pens
Can I use any type of pen for this project, or are there specific ones that work best?
While you can technically bling any pen with rhinestones, we recommend using the Ink Joy Pen for the best results. Its smooth barrel provides an ideal surface for adhering rhinestones, and its comfortable grip makes it easy to work with.
What size rhinestones should I use for my rhinestone pen project?
The size of rhinestones you use depends on your personal preference and the design you have in mind. For intricate designs or smaller pens, opt for smaller rhinestones like SS6 or SS10. For larger pens or bolder designs, larger rhinestones like SS16 or SS20 can make a statement.
What type of adhesive should I use to attach the rhinestones to my pen?
We recommend using a strong, clear-drying adhesive specifically designed for rhinestones and jewelry making. My favorite is Liquid Fusion, but E6000 adhesive is also a popular choice among crafters for its strong bond and versatility.
How do I create a pattern or design for my rhinestone pen?
You can create your design using rhinestone templates, which are available online or can be custom-made using design software like Cricut Design Space.
Alternatively, you can freehand your design directly onto the pen barrel using a pencil or marker before applying the rhinestones.
Can I wash my rhinestone pen after it’s been blinged?
While rhinestone pens are not typically designed to be submerged in water, they can withstand gentle cleaning with a damp cloth. Avoid soaking or scrubbing the rhinestones directly to preserve their adhesive bond and shine, and keep them out of extreme heat.
Can I use different colors or shapes of rhinestones for my pen project?
Absolutely! Get creative with your design by mixing and matching different colors, sizes, and shapes of rhinestones. Consider incorporating birthstone colors, gradient effects, or even adding charms for extra flair. The possibilities are endless!
