How to Make an Easy No-Sew Sock Snowman in Minutes

As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, I am trying to embrace winter by making some fun snowy day crafts. In particular, I love making families of sock snowman. Since this is my absolute favorite craft, I've gone through the process of making several diy sock snowmen just to show you how each one has their own personality. How much fun is that?

What is a sock snowman?

Sock snowmen are an adorable craft to make with kids and adults alike because, well, they're adorable! The best part is that you can get most of the supplies super cheap at the dollar store and you can make it with supplies you probably already have at home. These adorable snowmen are perfect to make for any age because they require no sewing! The reason people love these no-sew sock snowman crafts so much is because you can get virtually all of the supplies at the dollar tree.

I've linked the supplies from amazon just in case you do not have a dollar tree or dollar store near by. The best thing about this project is that it is cheap, easy and so much fun. Plus, it does not require too much rice. You will still be able to make dinner. In my experience, the diy sock snowman is fun for the whole family. They also make incredible gifts as well as table decor. I mean, how cute would it be to have each one holding a place card on the holiday table? So...grab your materials and let's get going!

Materials You’ll Need

To get started, gather these simple materials:

These are the basic materials you'll need to get started, however, you can add additional embellishments if you'd prefer. At the craft store, you can also use beads for the snowman's nose, doll accessories for the snowman's hat and google eyes if you do not want to use pins. Buttons are also a nice touch. Get creative!

Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Sock Snowman

1. Fill a cup with rice and pour into the sock

  • Pour the rice from the bag directly into the cup. Fill as much as you can.

  • Take the sock and stretch it over the top of the cup. Turn the cup/sock combination upside down and carefully shake until all of the rice is filled into the bottom half of the sock.

  • Repeat these two steps until you are happy with the amount of rice inside the cup. The size of the snowman will depend on how big or small you want your snowman to be.

  • Tie the sock tightly to ensure that no rice falls out of the top of the sock. Do not worry about the knot for right now because that will be covered with a hat. Just make sure that you've created a very tight knot.

Tie the sock tightly

  • Cut off any excess sock material above the knot. Save these scraps to use for other projects.

Trim off the excess sock. The knot will be the snowman’s head (the knot will be hidden under the hat)

2. Section off the body and the head

Take a rubber band and make a waist.

  • Squeeze the top inch or two of the stuffed sock.

  • Place a rubber band onto the area where you have squeezed. Try to wrap it around two times if possible. The rubber band should delineate the snowman's head from the body of the snowman. Have a second rubber band ready in case one breaks.

 3. Make the Hat

  • Take the fuzzy baby sock and cut off half of it. If you do not have a baby sock, use a pair of old socks in color

Take a colorful sock and cut off the toe. This will be the snowman’s hat.

  • Roll the sock and place it directly on top of the snowman's head. Once you are happy with the placement, add some glue

Use some craft glue and glue into place

  • Use the rest of the colorful sock to make a scarf.

4. Add clothing

  • This is where you can get creative. Cut off the foot of a small fuzzy, colored sock. The color of the sock is entirely up to you depending on what your preference is. You do not need to purchase a pair of new socks - you can just use whichever coloured sock you already have at home. Decorative socks look cute, too! I like to use a pair of mismatched socks

  • Add some glue to the knot on top of the snowman and put the winter hat (aka toe of the sock) onto the snowman's head.

  • Add a pom pom if you want that look.

  • Cut off the top of the sock and make a scarf. Use this to cover the rubber band so that it is not visible. This will further delineate the top of the snowman's neck so that you can see a clear definition between the snowman's body from the head and facial features. It also just looks more complete and polished.

Using the rest of the colorful sock, cut a strip and make a scarf. Tie it on!

4. Add the Features

Make buttons and face (not pictured). Place ball pins all the way into the sock.

  • Use the pins for the eyes

  • Add a carrot nose with an orange pin. Alternatively, they sell teeny tiny orange pom poms. This is a great way to make it look like a carrot

  • Feel free to add arms using pipe cleaners

  • Add an accessory like hot cocoa or a snowflake

  • Add glitter if you'd like! Be creative

  • Add colorful buttons if desired

  • If you do not have any supplies hanging around, feel free to add black dots with a black sharpie.

These cute snowmen make everyone happy. With just a cup of rice, an old sock and some fun crafts, you can make these little guys in no time. Plus...they make wonderful gifts!
