CRAFT OF THE DAY – A FAMILY PAINTING

Need something fun to do with your entire family? Consider making a piece of family art. Whether you like it or not, this period of time in our lives will be remembered forever. Despite the human suffering in the world, slowing down has presented many silver linings. Today, for the first time in almost three weeks, I forgot about the Coronavirus for several hours. It didn’t reach my thoughts at all because I was so distracted by doing this art project with my family. Since the beginning of our quarantine three weeks ago, I have not been able to get my kids to do art with me. You know how it goes with the shoemaker’s kids…

Today they were on board because I was allowing them to throw paint. Literally. We took a few canvases which I had in the basement (I know not many people have canvas laying around, but you can also use paper, bark, or anything as your canvas) and propped them up against a tree. We gathered every old bucket of house paint, acrylic paint and fabric paint we could find. We added water to make them more liquid. We experimented with cups and squeeze bottles and then just began dumping paint directly from the bottles. The kids went behind the canvas and poured paint again and again and again. We went live on instagram stories and had our audience tell us which colors to add. They negotiated. They bickered. They laughed. And yes, it was a mess. They also painted a giant rock and left some hand prints on some of the trees. I know to some of you this sounds like a nightmare, but I have to tell you it was worth it. We made two beautiful paintings that we will have forever — and I know I won’t regret that.

WHAT DO I NEED?
